Gaining Knowledge Acknowledging your learning style gives you insight on how to obtain a constructive pattern towards success. There are 3 different modes of learning styles which are visual, kinesthetic, and auditory. In visual mode, you can describe your learning preferences if you can learn by pictures, Shapes, sculpture, or paintings. Some individuals prefer learning by gestures, body movements, object manipulation and positing, which is kinesthetic. Last but not least, there is the auditory mode which includes  listening, rhythms, tone and chants. According to, Alsop Ryan, 1996, learning styles have a profound impact on learning. Personal awareness of learning styles and confidence in communicating this is the first steps towards achieving an optimal learning environment. (Alsop Ryan, 1996.) Discovering your personal learning style helps you with your skill development. This also gives you personal awareness and helps you to utilize your thinking skills effectively. Knowing your learning style helps you to navigate through your career and helps you to be in control of your own success. For instance, Omrod, 2008, p.106 wrote, â€Å"Some cognitive styles and dispositions do seem to influence how and what information is presented through words (verbal learners), whereas others seem to learn better when it’s presented through pictures (visual learners)†. Thus educational psychology students and aspiring teachers are being taught that students have particular learning styles and that these styles should be accommodated by instruction tailored to those learning styles. Having knowledge of my personal learning style helps me to make better judgments, when deciding on my point of view on a particular subject. I believe that being a visual learner, is a great way to learn. Most things people know is by seeing with their eyes and watching. When watching, it’s easier to learn a lot about people and things that are beneficial to you. I learn a lot about my surroundings and things about myself, being a visual learner. It is easy for me to organize information, define problems and develop theories. I believe being a visual learner is a strong asset because it helps me achieve on higher levels on a daily basis in everyday life. It is more convenient, well an advantage to know your learning style and to utilize it. Setting Goals Success comes from acquiring a positive mentality, preparing and focusing on desired goals. Success is making the best choices to prevent failure and to succeed. Success requires a challenge and commitment and helps an individual to accomplish goals. It is based on Ryan (1970) premise that conscious goals affect action. A goal is the object or aim of an action, for example, to attain a specific standard of proficiency, usually within a specified time limit. As industrial-organizational psychologists, our  primary interest has been to predict, explain, and influence performance on organizational or work-related tasks. Thus, we focused on the relationship between conscious performance goals and level of task performance rather than on discrete intentions to take specific actions (e. g. , to apply to graduate school, to get a medical examination). According to Dobbins, Pettman, 1997, Set Goals It’s mandatory to set goals, so that you can be successful. Goal setting can help an individual tremendously because they can set short term goals and accomplish them. I have many goals, dreams and aspirations†¦ My lifetime goal is to become a CEO of a 500 fortune company 10 years from now. Setting short term goals can help me achieve my long term goals and get closer to my dreams. Setting goals can also give me a peace of mind and keep me focused . Time management gives you the opportunity to get a lot done throughout the day. Eventually you will be able to accomplish small to larger tasks. Setting goals and managing time, you would surely achieve your set goals. Skills that you learn daily from school or your personal life can be used as transferable skills that will help you advance at being successful. We know that success is derived from both knowledge and positive mental attitude. We also know that failure is strongly associated with lack of knowledge and negative attitudes. Focusing upon desired goals stimulates excitement and enthusiasm, which are in turn strongly associated with positive mental attitude. Very few people are prepared t o set goals. Most people are not prepared to learn more or make the necessary efforts to be more positive. Apply Skills The writing process helps you advance in your education and career because it’s easy to brain storm. Applying knowledge you gain will always be beneficial. Academic integrity is important you are taking responsibility for your work. As far as conducting research and citing information where you have found your sources. Plagiarism a complex concept, argues Sutherland-Smith, who isolates six elements of plagiarism (pp. 70-3) from the work of Peccorari (2002): language borrowed or stolen source, by whom, without acknowledgement, with or without intent to deceive. Plagiarism comes with consequences if one isn’t careful. There is a possibility of being expelled from school. Conclusion Continuing academic success is a great path to take. On continuing your education you learn to gain knowledge, set goals and apply what you have learned. Knowing your learning style will also help you to achieve in being successful! Battle Of Gettysburg :: essays research papers fc

Selected Views of the Battle of Gettysburg On July 1st of 1863 the battle of Gettysburg began. The battle was more less an unexpected disaster; neither side had planed the battle they ended up in the same place and the battle begun. There where many wounded and many casualties. Much like the final battle in The Red Badge of Courage when most of Henry’s regiment is wiped out by a daring charge. This charge leads to the downfall of the Confederacy as well as the fall of Henry’s regiment. 3 days before the battle of Gettysburg the Union replaced General Hooker with General George G. Meade. The Battle lasted for 3 long bloody days. The Confederate army took heavy casualties causing this fight to be a major turning point in the war. Although the union was losing the war up to this point and out number 75,000 to 97,000, they still managed to win this crucial fight. â€Å"This was the bloodiest battle in the American history, on American soil† (tqjunior.advanced.org). On the first day of the battle not much fighting took place, not all of the army was there from either side. It seemed the Confederacy had the upper hand at first because they had twice as many men as the union in the beginning of battle. But the Union had the new repeating rifles that reloaded much faster then the Confederacy’s single-load muskets. The Union army positioned it’s self along wood fences on McPherson’s Ridge. These men were one of the first units to enter the area. They where able to hold off Lee’s army until more Union troops could arrive. The Confederates where not prepared for this new rain of bullets and they were forced to start retreating. After a short retreat they regrouped and began a flanking attack. The union was forced to retreat and Gettysburg had fallen to the confederates for the day. The next day there would be hope for the union would have a new advantage. On day 2 the Union troops positioned themselves on top of Cemetery Hill and Cemetery Ridge. General Sickles of the union was ordered to fortify Little Round top but he saw no value in this and advanced to Devil’s Den. After heavy fighting in Devil’s Den General Sickles army was forced to retreat several times first to the Wheatfield, then the peach orchard and finally to Emmetsburg road. There where battles fought at each location as well as fighting on Culp’s hill that had a famous bayonet charge by Colonel Chamberlain. General Longstreet was order to attack Little Round Top, Devil’s Den, the wheat fields, and the peach orchard.

George is described as a man that is sharp with strong features, while Lennie is the exact opposite, being a big man with a big and shapeless face. Lennie also has a mild mental disability, which can be inferred as they started talking. Lennie also doesnt know his own strength, and very often kills the animals that he pets. The day after they get dropped off miles away, they find a farm and apply for a job. Insisting that him and Lennie are cousins, they get the job. They then soon meet Candy, the handyman on the ranch. Candy has a missing hand and is the owner of a very old dog. They also meet Curley, the son of the boss. He is very mean spirited and is newly married. He is very possessive of his new wife, and is always filled with jealous suspicion. After Lennie and George go to settle down for the night, Curleyrs wife starts to flirt with them. George then tells Lennie that he ne eds to stay away from her because nothing good can come from her. The next day, they meet Slim, one of the more powerful men on the ranch. He is a very skilled mule driver and takes up friendship with George and Lennie. The next day, Slim is told by George that he and Lennie, in fact, arent cousins. They have been good friends since childhood because of his disability. He also tells Slim that they were forced to leave their last job because Lennie had tried to touch a womanrs dress and was then falsely accused of rape. After this, Candy hears about George and Lenniers plan to buy land and make a farm. Candy then offers his life savings if he can live on the farm with them, to which George and Lennie agree. The three of them then make a pact to not let anybody else know about their plans. While Curley is searching for his wife, he gets angry and starts to look for an easy target to lash out on. When he gets back to the house, he picks a fight with Lennie, and Lennie breaks Curleyrs hand while squeezing it. The next night, when many of the men go to a local brothel, Lennie is left with Crooks and Candy. Curleyrs wife then comes to flirt with the men. She then finds out that Lennie accidentally killed the puppy, and that he is actually the one that hurt her husband, not a machine. After she offers for him to touch her hair, she cries out in pain as he grabs her hair too hard. As she screams in pain, he grabs her to try to make her quiet, but he accidentally breaks her neck. After this happens, Lennie runs to the pool that George has told him to go to if anything bad ever happened. The men then get together and form a mob to chase after Lennie after they had found out what he did. George then come to meet his friend, and he starts to describe what the farm would look like when they got it. As the mob continues to grow louder and louder, George shoots Lennie in the back of the head, only out of mercy. As the mob arrives, George makes them believe that he had taken the gun from Lennie, and only Slim really knows what happened. Slim and George then leave, with the other men behind them being very confused. The point of view used for Of Mice and Men is third person omniscient. The author, John Steinbeck knows what the characters are doing at all times, and he also knows how they think. We can tell this by how he describes the setting as well. He describes it as A few miles south of the Soledad, the Salinas River drops in close to the hillside bank runs deep and green. The setting is described as a very beautiful but small landscape. But something in the setting that is deeper than the landscape. This is the Great Depression. This left people, such as George and Lennie, without work and searching for a job. This makes everyone suspicious about everyone and everything that they do, and this makes the friendship of George and Lennie even more valuable. There are many themes in Of Mice and Men. Some of these include the rabbits, Candyrs dog, and George and Lenniers farm. The rabbits can symbolize the innocence in the world. With Lenniers love for petting rabbits, they establish his innocence. With him always petting them and killing them, this also symbolizes the downfall of innocence in the world. Candyrs dog symbolizes the survival of the fittest. With the dog getting old and useless, they have to put the dog down. This makes it clear that only the strong will survive during this time. It also foreshadows the way that Lennie dies, with a gunshot to the back of the head. The last symbol is the farm that George and Lennie dream of. This is a symbol of paradise and the American dream. They talk of how they will live off of the land and how lavish it will be. They make it seem like it will be paradise and will be the best place theyve ever lived. Of Mice and Men can best be described as realistic, depressing, and honest. He uses things such as poverty, limited resources, and violence to display the type of realism he is going for. He is trying to convey that the American dream for some was purely just hopeless. Because of this, the honesty comes out in the story. It is displayed in how George always has to take care of Lennie. This, meanwhile, is depressing because many find the American dream as hopeless. The tone in Of Mice and Men is mostly depressing. This is because despite all of George and Lenniers effort, they still dont get their farm like they dreamed of. It also portrays how caring for someone can be a difficult task if they have a disability, such as Lenniers. Itrs also hard to try to live during this time, seeing as itrs the Great Depression. This makes everyone very suspicious at all times, and tensions are high. The title actually plays a big role in what it means towards the book. When Steinbeck wrote this book, he referenced it towards the poem To a Mouse [on turning her up in her nest with a plough]. In this, the writer accidentally kills a mouse with a plough while ploughing a field. The author then goes on to explain how that just because mice and men are different, in the end, we are both mortal. This is told by the story because of how only the strong survive, but in the end, everyone dies. Overall, I thought that this book was very good at portraying how times were tough and how you had to work for what you wanted. This also tells about how getting what you want isnt always the best thing, and can be seen when George and Lennie dont get their farm in the end. It also tells about how humans can be difficult to tolerate, but in the end, its all worth it.
